Are you looking for money to pay for your education after high school? Are you looking for money that you don’t have to pay back? Then let’s take a look at grants, bursaries and scholarships in 3 easy steps.

Step 1 – Find out what grants, bursaries and scholarships are.

What are grants and bursaries? A grant is money given by either the federal or provincial/territorial governments (or sometimes both) to eligible students who demonstrate financial need. Bursaries could be given by schools or private organizations. Some bursaries depend on grades or community work.

The best part about a grant is that you don’t have to pay it back.

Examples of grants are the new Canada Student Grants from the federal government.

What is a scholarship? A scholarship is money you get directly to help cover some of your post secondary expenses. It can sometimes be a credit for tuition or residence payments that go directly to your college or university. Like grants and bursaries, scholarships don't have to be repaid.

Most scholarships are awarded on the basis of excellence in a particular area such as academics, sports, music or for community work.

Step 2 – Figure Out What You May be Eligible For

If you look into grants, bursaries and scholarships, you’ll see that there are a number of ways you could qualify:

1. Students with financial need could be eligible for government grants and bursaries. There are a number of them, so look at the CanLearn loan and grant estimators to learn more.
2. If you excel in a subject, sport, music or you volunteer, visit CanLearn's Scholarship Search to find out what’s available. There are thousands of scholarships, so you’re bound to find a few that you could qualify for.

Step 3 – How to Apply

1. Students are automatically assessed for most needs-based government grants and bursaries when they apply for a government student loan. If you’re eligible, your loan provider will issue the money to you or to your school on your behalf.
2. If you want to apply for a scholarship, research those you may be eligible for, and then apply online through CanLearn's Scholarship.
