Financial assistance measures are available to help full-time students across Canada access post-secondary education:

• The Canada Student Grants Program assists Canadian families who struggle with the cost of higher education by offering grants, money that does not need to be paid back, to eligible students.
• The federal Repayment Assistance Plan is an optional program available for student loan borrowers who are having difficulty making their Canada Student Loan payments. No eligible borrower will have a repayment period of more than 15 years (or 10 years for persons with permanent disabilities).

What’s available while I’m in study?

• Up to $210 per week in federal loans. Loans are also available from your province or territory of permanent residence, with the exception of Yukon.
• Canada Student Grants:
  • $250 per month of study for students from low-income families.
  • $100 per month of study for students from middle-income families.
  • $200 per month of study per child under 12 years of age, for students with dependants.

What’s available after study?

• The Repayment Assistance Plan for students who are having difficulty making loan payments. Payments will be based on your income, and family size.

To be eligible for Canada Student Loans for full-time studies, you must:

• be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada, or designated as a protected person;
• be a permanent resident of a province or territory that issues Canada Student Loans (the Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Quebec operate their own student loan programs. Contact your provincial or territorial student financial assistance office for more information.);
• demonstrate financial need;
• be enrolled in at least 60 percent of a full course load;
• be enrolled in a degree, diploma or certificate program that runs for at least 12 weeks within a 15-week period and is offered by a designated post-secondary educational institution;
• pass a credit check if you are 22 or older and applying for a Canada Student Loan for the first time;
• maintain satisfactory grades if you’ve already applied for and received a Canada Student Loan; and,
• not have exhausted your maximum lifetime limit of financial assistance, including interest-free status

Your eligibility for Canada Student Grants is assessed automatically when you apply and qualify for a Canada Student Loan through your province or territory of permanent residence.
